The Eichsfeldmuseum (formerly "Eichsfeld Heimatmuseum") is a cultural and historical museum in Heilbad Heiligenstadt in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . The city of Heilbad Heiligenstadt is responsible for this.

History of the museum

After years of efforts to set up a local history museum in Eichsfeld , a local history museum was opened in Duderstadt in 1931 and finally in Heiligenstadt in 1932. It is housed in the former Jesuit college in Kollegiengasse, a baroque building from 1740. The first collections were built by Johannes Müller and students from the Heiligenstädter Gymnasium, which was housed in the same building until 1929. There were closings during World War II and during extensive renovations in 1948/50 (with temporary accommodation in the "Eichsfelder Hof"), 1994/96, 2011/12 and spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In 2017 the museum was renamed from "Eichsfelder Heimatmuseum" to "Eichsfeldmuseum". In June 2020 a new concept was presented for the Eichsfeldmuseum, which provides for the restructuring of the museum.

The museum provides information on three floors about the history of Eichsfeld and the city of Heiligenstadt and the religious tradition of the region, as well as well-known personalities such as Tilman Riemenschneider . Objects of art, costumes, historical furniture and examples of craft traditions are also on display. The Strecker bird collection presents over 200 bird and other animal species. In addition, there are regular special exhibitions on various topics.
