Eidola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eidola (from the Greek Εἴδωλα) are Bilderchen , which according to the teaching of Atomists Demokrit and Epikur replace, from things of an objective reality, thereafter reach the sensory organs and in the perception allow.

According to Democritus, all objects are constituted by the union of atoms. These atoms differ from one another in shape, order, position, size and weight. All things now continuously send out groups of atoms (eidola), which are fine, invisible reflections of things and enable sensory knowledge through contact with the sense organs.
