Marking the landing direction

Eight Bells ( English for eight bells ) was the name of a British airfield from the Second World War in southwest Egypt . The supply field was captured by the Long Range Desert Group in 1940 and used as a landing pad for their reconnaissance aircraft. There was originally an Italian fuel depot that was taken over by the Long Range Desert Group. The name is derived from a north-western, approximately seven kilometer long chain of hills with eight bell-like elevations.

Even today, petrol cans sunk into the ground mark the place that is occasionally visited by tourists.
