An ideal city
An ideal city is a short story by Jules Verne , published under the French title Une ville idéale on 13./14. December 1875 was published in the Journal d'Amiens .
action
Jules Verne, director of the Amiens Academy , tells his colleagues about a dream in which he takes a tour of the city of Amiens in 2000. Thanks to the architectural, technological, medical and social changes that Amiens has now gone through, Jules Verne hardly recognizes his city.
background
The story is based on a lecture Jules Verne gave on December 12, 1875 at the annual public meeting of the Academy of Amiens. The author had been a member of the academy since 1872 and chaired it in 1875 and 1881. The text, which also contains elements of his then unpublished novel Paris in the 20th Century , reports in a satirical way about the future overcoming of social and urban problems. The French original of the story was republished in 1999 by the Center International Jules-Verne . A German translation by Volker Dehs appeared in 2002 in the chronicles of the science fiction group Hanover ; a revised version appeared in 2018 in the anthology Die Welt der Messieurs Verne .
