On December 31, 2011, the " official population " for Minden was 81,904 (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices ) according to the information and technology department of North Rhine-Westphalia (IT.NRW ).

In the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the modern age , the population of Minden grew only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. It was not until industrialization in the 19th century that population growth accelerated. In 1816 only 6,500 people lived in the city, by 1900 there were already 25,000. By 1965 that number had doubled to 50,000. For a long time Minden was only to be found on the left, high bank of the Weser, but with the construction of the monastery Mauritius in 1024 on the right bank of the Weser, the settlement on the opposite bank began; the Weser was now built on both banks.

With the incorporation of numerous places on January 1, 1973, the population rose from 55,000 in 1972 to 80,000 in 1973.

The population figures are census results (¹). The first known census took place in Minden in 1722. Thereafter, counting was carried out at irregular intervals, from 1822 every three years. The information relates to the "local population" until 1831, and to the "customs clearance population" from 1834 to 1867.
