Bombay-Matunga railway accident

In the Bombay-Matunga railway accident on June 13, 1966, two suburban trains collided head - on at Matunga station in Bombay (today: Mumbai ). 57 people died.

Starting position

One train was in the rush hour from downtown in the outer district of Thane on the road, the other went in the opposite direction, coming from outside the train station Victoria Station (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus ) to. Together, the two trains carried more than 2,500 passengers, including numerous school children and workers.

At the time of the accident, heavy monsoon rain was falling.

Presumably due to the heavy rain, the automatic signaling system failed and the driver of the train, who was supposed to wait for the other train to pass, was not asked to stop. When one of the two trains changed tracks, there was a head-on collision. The front cars of both trains were completely smashed.

57 people died and over 100 others were injured.
