Durban Railway Accident (1965)
In the Durban railway accident on October 4, 1965, a South African Railways suburban train derailed near Durban , South Africa . At least 81 people died.
the accident
The suburban train consisted of three carriages that were heavily overcrowded with more than 1000 passengers . The train carried black people from Durban to the KwaMashu township in front of the city . About 3 km before the terminus, at Effingham Junction , the train derailed .
consequences
At least 81 people died and several hundred more were injured. Angry passengers lynched a signal box staff and another white man, who was near the accident site.
