Ghaziabad railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Ghaziabad railway accident on May 6, 1908, two trains collided head - on at Ghaziabad (then United Provinces in British India ) due to the failure of the train protection system . About 120 people died.

Starting position

On the single-track route of the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway between Ghaziabad and Dasna , train journeys were secured by the tablet system , according to which a security system shared by two neighboring stations only ever issued one tablet. Only the engine driver who had the tablet in his possession was allowed to enter the route. The scene of the accident was in a wooded curve.

One of the trains involved in the accident carried a transport container with flammable gas. Both trains were traveling at around 60 km / h each.

the accident

The train protection system failed in a manner that was never clarified and released a tablet in each of the two stations. Two trains, one each from Ghaziabad and Dasna, drove towards each other, recognized the dangerous situation relatively late and collided head-on. Both locomotives and a number of cars were badly damaged. The gas container exploded and set both trains on fire. Because of this, the exact number of deaths could no longer be determined.

consequences

Around 120 people died and over 50 were injured.
