Ibadan Railway Accident (1952)

In the Ibadan railway accident, 34 km south of Ibadan , Nigeria , on October 15, 1952, heavy equipment collided with a following passenger train . More than 34 people died.

Starting position

A freight train was derailed . An emergency train was sent to the accident site, spark off again around the derailed cars. At the end of the train he took a recovery crane with him.

the accident

During the journey, the coupling between the crane and the train came loose and the crane rolled backwards on a downhill slope of around five kilometers. There he collided with a following passenger train, the first car being destroyed and the second and third car being pushed into one another.

consequences

More than 34 people died. The rescue work turned out to be difficult because the next operational recovery crane first had to be brought in from a distance of 1,600 km.
