In the railway accident in Populonia on February 18, 1934, a diesel multiple unit collided with the steam locomotive of a special train near Populonia , a district of Piombino . 34 people died.

The accident occurred on the then single-track line between Campiglia Marittima and Piombino. The railcar was traveling at around 120 km / h and 48 passengers when it collided with the steam locomotive of the special train. Fire broke out. All victims were in the railcar.
