Ekphonesis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ekphonesis (Greek ἐκφώνησις: "exclamation") as a rhetorical figure describes an exclamation in a speech. In the Byzantine rite , the ekphonesis is a section of doxology that is recited in a raised voice. There is a special notation system for the music of this Ekphonesis.

In Western music, the Ekphonesis corresponds to the Exclamatio , a figure from the baroque musical theory of figures , which symbolically stands for an exclamation. It is characterized by a large interval jump (almost always a sixth ).
