Electric VLSI Design System (abbreviated Electric ) is an open source electronic design automation - software (EDA) for the creation of circuit diagrams in the electronics , in particular integrated circuit plans (IC). Electric is free software and, as a program package, is part of the GNU project.

Development history

Electric was developed around 1980 by Steven M. Rubin in the C programming language . In the meantime it has been sold by various companies. Since 1998 it has been published by the GNU Free Software Fondation under the GPL license (and thus free of charge and open source). From 2000 the company Static Free Software was founded to publish the software. Work on the version in the C programming language was discontinued in 2003 and a first version in Java was completed in 2005. Oracle (and before the purchase, Sun Microsystems) has supported development by employing developers since 1999.

Differences to other EDA solutions

In contrast to comparable software in which polygons are moved on different levels of the wafer, the layout is displayed as integrated circuits with Electric. There are nodes (eg., Transistors) then (with cables wires ) are Connected. This approach has advantages and disadvantages. Users need more time to familiarize themselves with how the program works. As an advantage, some functions can be calculated by the program more quickly than with other programs.
