The srl Elektra is an Italian producer of high-quality espresso machines , which in addition to its high functionality and their design. In addition to single-lever and semi-automatic machines, coffee grinders and accessories are also manufactured. In contrast to other manufacturers of espresso machines, Elektra still does not produce fully automatic coffee machines, but only machines with portafilter. Elektra machines are mainly used in the catering sector and less in the private sector.

History and technology

The company was founded in 1947 by Umberto Fregnan and has been owned by the Fregnan family since it was founded . Today the company is managed by Federico Fregnan and his brother Andrea Fregnan. From the very beginning, the focus of the Elektra machines was on simple operation and maintenance. Elektra was a very innovative company from the start, which is evident from the large number of patents it has granted. The world's first machine with an automatic hydraulic unit was presented as early as 1950. In addition to the water level control with float, which was developed by the company as a sealless system, the automatic delivery with an electrically controlled valve (1968) and the electronic delivery with five dosages (1978) were also developed.

The machines are still being built by hand and with a focus on a long service life and usability. Copper is still used exclusively for the boiler , and 80 percent of the parts are produced by Elektra itself. All machines are tested for 48 hours before delivery.

Models

Today Elektra manufactures two categories of machines, which are aimed either at professional users ( Divisione Bar ) or at private customers ( Divisione Casa ). Seven different series of semi-automatic devices are produced in the Divisione Bar area . The “Nivola” and “Family Retro” series are produced for the Divisione Casa , which include semi-automatic devices as well as a single-lever machine. The entire product range includes over 40 models. Mills and accessories are also offered for the respective areas.

A characteristic feature of the Elektra models is the sometimes elaborate equipment of the machines: For example, the eagle, the company symbol that can be found on the top of the cover of some machines, is sand-cast . Closing buttons made of cut Murano glass are also available. Furthermore, some models are equipped with eye-catching decorative panels in the shape of a coat of arms or with the company logo.

Perception in the media

Because of their design and functionality - but also because of their high price - Elektra machines are featured in some luxury and lifestyle publications. This applies in particular to the retro-style machines of the “Belle Epoque” and “Family Retrò” series.

Elektra machines have been used in famous cafes and bars around the world for decades. Espresso and coffee, for example, are prepared using Elektra machines in the famous Caffè Florian in Venice and in the Harrods department store in London.

When a boiler on an Elektra machine burst on September 14, 2010, six people were injured in a British Sainsbury's supermarket in Farnborough, Hampshire . After the accident, all machines at Sainsbury's that exclusively use Elektra were shut down. After an investigation of the supermarket chain, a change by the manufacturer in the safety valve in 2009 was held responsible for what Sainsbury's reactivated its old machines. According to a statement published by Elektra on February 24, 2012, the accident was triggered by a faulty electrical connection in the supermarket and not by a faulty machine. This has been confirmed by an independent test laboratory.
