Misery Street

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eduard Jacobs was the first to refer to a street in the Harz Mountains as Elendsstraße , which, in his opinion, represented a cross-connection between Kaiserweg and Trockweg and was of independent importance. Even today the town of Oberharz am Brocken advertises that the district of Elend was on this street in Elendstal, which in the 15th century is said to have been "one of the busiest, but also most dangerous streets in the Harz". But as early as 1942 Walther Grosse pointed out that Elendsstrasse owes not only its name, but "its very existence" to Eduard Jacobs.
