The Elevador do Município (also: Elevador da Biblioteca and Elevador de S. Julião ) was a free-standing passenger elevator in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .

He connected the Largo de S. Julião (today: Praça do Município ) in the district with the Largo da Biblioteca (today: Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas Artes ) in the higher-lying district of Chiado .

The striking steel structure was built according to plans by the engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard and put into operation on January 12, 1897. The elevator entrance was in the Largo de S. Julião building, n.º 13 . The exit platform was 29.6 meters high. From there, a 20-meter-long walkway led over the Calçada de São Francisco to the terrace of the Palace of the Visconde de Coruche and on to the Largo da Biblioteca . The elevator was approved for 25 people.

After the commissioning of the Rua da Conceição - Calçada de São Francisco - Camões line of the Lisbon tram , the elevator ceased operations and was dismantled in 1920.

The elevator gave its name to an attempted coup in which Republicans and dissidents wanted to bring about the overthrow of the monarchy on January 28, 1908. However, the First Portuguese Republic was not able to prevail until 1910.
