The Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas Artes (short: Largo das Belas Artes ) is a square in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is located on the southern edge of the Chiado district in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior and is formed from the converging streets Rua Ivens and Rua Vítor Cordon .

history

The square was originally named Largo da Biblioteca Pública , named after the public library that had been housed in the building of the former Convento de São Francisco da Cidade since 1837 . In the 1970s it moved to the Campo Grande as the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library) .

The Academia Nacional de Belas Artes (Academy of Fine Arts) , which is also located in the old convent building, applied for the square to be renamed. It was followed by the Lisbon City Council on April 6, 1982.

Buildings

In addition to the São Francisco da Cidade convent, the two listed palace buildings of Palacete Pereira Costa and Palacete Iglésias shape the appearance of the square.
