Elian is a male given name borrowed from French in the 1980s. It goes back to the nickname Aelianus, a derivation of the Roman family name Aelius . The French form is Élian [e'ljan]. However, the name is not only common in Romance-speaking countries. The feminine form of Elian is Eliane .
