Elias of Merw

Elias von Merw was a 7th century Nestorian scholar and clergyman.

Little is known about his life. In the middle of the 7th century he was Archbishop of the Assyrian Church of the East in Merw , in the northeast of the Sassanid Empire . He was on the deathbed of Catholicos Ischo-Jab III in 659 . present, with whom he must have worked very closely.

Elias wrote several works in the Syrian language , but they are in fact lost. Among other things, he wrote theological commentaries, especially on passages of the Bible, letters and a church history that is now lost and that is considered trustworthy. Elias is also considered to be a possible author of the Anonymus Guidi in recent research . There it is mentioned that Elias converted many members of Turkish and other tribes to Christianity.
