Under embolia cutis medicamentosa (synonym: Nicolau syndrome , also livedo-left dermatitis ) refers to a so-called drug syndrome as a result of intramuscular injection may occur.

The cause is an accidental injection of a mostly crystalloid substance into an artery . This leads to an embolism in the affected blood vessel and, as a result, to a reduced blood supply ( ischemia ) to the skin in the area of the injection site. Because of this long-term undersupply, the affected area dies locally ( necrosis ).
