The emz-Hanauer GmbH & Co. KGaA is a global German company based in Nabburg / Upper Palatinate. With over 1200 employees worldwide, emz develops and produces components and systems for dishwashers, washing machines, dryers and refrigerators. The company is the global market leader for locks and sensors. Sales have more than doubled in the last 10 years. The company has its own plants in the Czech Republic, Mexico and China and a global sales network. 150 employees develop solutions for global customers in the “Customer Innovation Space” opened in Nabburg in 2016, in close coordination with the markets. In the fields of building technology (Smart Home) and waste disposal technology (Smart City), emz-Hanauer is also working on the trending topics of digitization and the Internet of Things.

Ernst Hanauer Sr. (1897–1970) founded the company under the name "Elektromanufaktur Zangenstein" on May 14, 1948 in Zangenstein / Upper Palatinate. He used his contacts from his time in the management of AEG, for which he had worked in Berlin and South America. The first product for the then AEG subsidiary NSF was a variable capacitor for the first German post-war radio "Heinzelmann" from Grundig. The production started with 8 women in the basement of a glass loop in Zangenstein. The capacitor business expanded in the following years thanks to the outstanding emz quality. At its peak, 800 employees produced capacitors for the entire German consumer electronics industry. In 1949, the so-called "Christmas tree chain" for OSRAM, a product that was not finally discontinued until 2017. In the following years, the company developed from a pure contract manufacturer to an integrated technology group. In 1950 a tool shop was founded. In 1955, apprenticeship training began in 1971 in the company's own training workshop. In 1958, emz developed its own product for the first time with the so-called plastic chain. From 1961 emz also had its own production facility. In 1964 the first own winding machine for capacitors is designed and built here. Starting in 1965, the company developed and produced its first products for building technology with components for night storage heaters.

In 1975/76 an own development department is founded. With this, the technical competence moved even more into the focus of the company profile. In the years that followed, customer relationships developed more and more into development partnerships. From the beginning, emz relied on a close, trusting cooperation with its customers. Seriousness and unconditional reliability led to a continuous customer relationship. Even today there are partnerships with the customers from the very beginning.

The entry into the topic of household appliances began as early as 1959 with the first safety controller for stoves. In 1980 this business unit was expanded with the first water level regulator for washing machines and dishwashers. In 1984 the first emz door lock for washing machines goes into series production.

In 1994 the first locking unit for rubbish bins is developed and the entry into the strategic business unit “environmental technology” is completed. Environmental engineering. A topic that is fully in line with the trend of digital transformation today.

From the end of the 90s, emz developed into a global player. The target markets are the USA and Asia. And the position in Europe is also being systematically expanded.

Customer proximity is an important factor here. In 1997 the first foreign location was opened in Cernosin / Czech Republic. In 2004 the emz location in Queretaro / Mexico started, in 2011 a production location of its own in Nanjing / China, which is currently being expanded as a development location. The Customer Applications Center for web app development was opened in Pilsen at the beginning of 2020.
