The Enciclopedia universal ilustrada europeo-americana is an encyclopedia from Spain . It is often called Espasa for short after the publisher .

It initially comprised 70 volumes in 72 books (volumes 18 and 28 were published in the form of two partial volumes) and appeared between 1908 and 1930. Ten supplementary volumes were published between 1930 and 1933, and 33 further volumes between 1935 and 2003 an index, an appendix and an atlas, so that a total of 118 books were available.

In 2003 the Enciclopedia was reissued in 90 volumes. This edition consisted of the original 82 books and an eight-volume "Complemento Enciclopédico 1934–2002" which, in alphabetical order, offers newer knowledge.

With its 90 volumes and over 900,000 articles or over 200 million words, the Enciclopédia universal was for a long time the most comprehensive encyclopedia in the world.

Since December 2005, the English language Wikipedia contains more words than the Spanish Enciclopedia universal for the first time .
