Encyclopedia of Life Sciences

The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences is a special encyclopedia with the aim of comprehensively presenting the knowledge of biology and related scientific disciplines. It comprises 26 volumes, the first 20 of which were published in 2002. Six further volumes appeared in 2007 as a supplementary edition and comprise the content that was initially published in the Internet edition available since April 2001 after the first 20 volumes had appeared. Access to the article inventory on the Internet is chargeable. The online content is updated and supplemented every two to three months.

The encyclopedia contains around 4,000 articles in English on around 18,300 pages . These were written by specialist scientists and were subject to an external assessment by other scientists (peer review) before publication . With regard to the content, a distinction is made between three article categories, namely Introductory articles (introductory articles ), Advanced articles (advanced articles) for special topics and Keynote articles (basic articles ) for controversial, novel or current topics. The encyclopedia was published by Nature Publishing Group until 2004 and has been published by John Wiley & Sons since then .
