The Energy Services Biel / Bienne (ESB) is an energy services and water utility of the city of Biel; it supplies its customers with electricity, gas, water, heating / cooling products and telecommunications. Following the political decision of the Biel population, the ESB has been an independent municipal company since January 1, 2013. The owner is the city of Biel. The company employs 169 people (as of December 2019) and generated sales of 120.9 million Swiss francs in 2019. The ESB is committed to sustainable energy production and the efficient use of energy. The company has been supplying customers with electricity from exclusively renewable sources from Swiss suppliers since 2017.

history

The roots of the ESB go back to the founding of the Biel gas lighting company and the commissioning of the Biel gas works in 1862. In 1875, the Biel waterworks was founded and the construction of a water supply network began. Another milestone followed in 1894 with the transmission of electricity from Bözingen to Biel, when the Biel electricity company was founded. In 1994, the merger of the electricity and gas and water works in Biel became Energie Service Biel / Bienne. After a decision by the population of Biel, the ESB has been an independent, public-law institution since January 1, 2013 with the city of Biel / Bienne as the owner.

In 2015, the ESB merged its two locations in the modernized headquarters on Gottstattstrasse.

ESB company building

sustainability

All of the ESB's electricity products come from renewable energy. As a standard product, the ESB supplies sustainably produced electricity from the Brügg and Hagneck hydropower plants, supplemented with electricity from Swiss hydropower.

The ESB is committed to the construction of wind turbines and realizes its own solar power plants (e.g. photovoltaic system on the roof of the Tissot Arena Biel).

The green electricity product "Biel / Bienne-Strom" is "naturemade star" certified and meets requirements for environmental compatibility. Part of its ecological added value flows into the ESB eco fund, with which the ESB (co-) finances ecological improvement measures in the vicinity of the production facilities.

The ESB launched Gaz Plus as standard, consisting of 80% natural gas and a fixed biogas share of 20%. He is thus offering his gas customers a more climate-friendly and environmentally friendly fuel and fuel. The ESB is one of the first gas suppliers in Switzerland with a biogas share of 20% in the coverage of all gas purchases of its tariff customers. Since Swiss biogas production does not yet produce such large quantities, the ESB has the biogas produced, fed in and certified in Denmark. The origin of the rest of the natural gas from Norway is also guaranteed with certificates of origin.

The ESB maintains a charging network in Biel and offers charging solutions for private and business customers.
