The English house

The English House is one of the largest and tallest town houses in Gdansk . It was built on Brotbänkengasse (ulica Chlebnicka 13/16) in 1568–1570 by Hans Kramer (master builder) for the client Dirk Lylge . The renaissance facade measures 15.5 m wide and 30 m high. The facade has five floors with six paired windows each and an additional three floors in the gable.

The facade and the gilded statues of Roman horsemen were the work of Wilhelm Jacobsen from Brussels. The entrance was designed in the shape of a triumphal arch.

The client was forced to sell the house in 1572 due to bankruptcy. It changed hands several times, was u. a. Used as a meeting place by English merchants, hence the name. It served as an inn from 1722 and as a hotel in the nineteenth century. At the beginning of the twentieth century the house was destined for demolition and was saved by buying it from private hands. After the destruction in 1945 only the lower parts of the facade remained. The house was rebuilt in the seventies of the twentieth century and houses the graphic faculty of the Gdańsk Art Academy and a student residence.
