K63.2 Intestinal fistula
ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019)

An enterocutaneous fistula is an unnatural duct between the intestines and the skin.

Emergence

Enterocutaneous fistulas arise as a result of inflammatory bowel disease ( Crohn's disease , ulcerative colitis ) or as a complication after surgical interventions on the gastrointestinal tract . In the latter case, they are often the result of an anastomotic leak .

Enterocutaneous fistulas are rarely surgically created to relieve the intestines. One then speaks of an enterostomy .

treatment

Treatment is usually surgical. In the case of fistulas without peritonitis , however, a wait-and-see approach can often be used, as in many cases they close spontaneously.
