Epipharynx
The Greek word epipharynx is made up of epi ( over , on ) and pharynx ( throat ).
Epipharnyx in insects
In insects , the epipharynx is an appendix to the head capsule that attaches above the mouth opening. This is not a real mouth tool as it was not formed from former extremities .
The epipharynx is actually the membranous and often hairy inside of the labrum (more precisely the clypeolabrum), i.e. the "upper lip" of the insect. Opposite the epipharynx is the hypopharynx on the underside of the mouth opening.
Epipharynx in Mammals
In mammals , the term epipharynx is used synonymously for the nasal part of the pharynx nasopharynx .
