An episode novel (French: roman à tiroir ) is a novel that contains intrigues or episodes that can be dispensed with for the main plot and easily detached from the context . The term is used partially, but not generally, in a derogatory way.

The episode novels include, for example, The Secrets of Paris (1843) by Eugène Sue , Scenes from the Life of Bohème (1847/49) by Henri Murger , At Night Under the Stone Bridge by Leo Perutz and At the Shorter End of the Sun Alley by Thomas Brussig .
