Epitaph for Jakob Spittler.

The epitaph for Jakob Spittler is one of 14 epitaphs in the Uffkirche in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt . The outer epitaph is dedicated to the Mayor of Cannstatt, Jakob Spittler (1574–1635). The three-story Renaissance epitaph by an unknown master consists of a large aedicule with a memorial inscription, a small aedicule with the family coat of arms and a gable top.

description

The epitaph for Jakob Speidel is one of the most important Renaissance epitaphs in Württemberg and surpasses the Spittler epitaph with its sculptural wealth. Like the Speidel epitaph, the Spittler epitaph is protected by the eaves, but due to the lack of wire mesh cladding, the gable top is heavily soiled by bird droppings.

Great aedicula

The three-story wall epitaph is attached to the south wall of the church. It consists of a large aedicule with a memorial inscription, a small aedicule with the family coat of arms and a gable top. The large aedicula rests with 2 Corinthian columns on a flat console plate, which is supported by 2 volute-shaped consoles with the relief of a grotesque mask. The memorial inscription is placed between the pillars (inscription 1). The entablature consists of an architrave, frieze and cover plate. An inscription stone with a bible solution (inscription 2), which is supported by a volute-shaped keystone ( agraffe ), breaks through the architrave and frieze. The frieze bears a relief with a mask and cloth garland to the left and right of the inscription stone.

Small aedicule

The small aedicula rests on the top plate of the large aedicule. Two Doric columns flank a medallion with the relief of the coat of arms of the Spittler family, which is crowned by a helmet and framed by acanthus leaves. A tape with the inscription: "Jacob Spitler's combs" hovers over the medallion. The aedicula is flanked on the sides by volute-like, scrollwork-decorated supports. The top plate of the aedicula has a curved gable top with a relief of an order with a bow. The order's inscription is illegible because it is heavily soiled by bird droppings.
