Iovis epulum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iovis epulum was a festival in honor of Jupiter during the Ludi plebeii , on the Ides of November, November 13th. This epulum was aligned by the plebeian aediles . During the imperial period, there is also a festival during the Ludi Romani on September 13th, the Ides of September.

The meal, in which all the Roman senators were involved, took place in the temple of Iuppiter Capitolinus and was organized by the college of the septemviri epulonum . September 13th is also the foundation day of this temple. Jupiter, Juno and Minerva , the other two deities of the Capitoline Triassic , took part in the meal, which took place in the form of a lecturerium in historical times . The statues of the deities were laid on precious pillows and the meal was symbolically offered to them.

Failure to attend the ceremony was seen as an expression of the division or incapacity of the Senate.
