The Erdélyi Híradó was the first regular political newspaper in Transylvania . From 1840 it served as the main press organ of the Transylvanian (national radical) opposition. Its employees campaigned for the unification of Hungary with Transylvania and published their liberal ideas and free-thinking political opinions. The Erdélyi Híradó was published between 1827 and 1848 - albeit with a few interruptions. In its heyday, it included contributions from political and literary personalities such as Zsigmond Kemény , Miklós Jósika and Miklós Wesselényi .

The newspaper appeared twice a week (four times in the last few months) in Kolozsvár . Ferenc Pethe, Sámuel Méhes and Ferenc Ocsvai were part of the editorial team.

The first period (1827-1831)

  • first appearance as Hazai Híradó
  • Other employees of the sheet are not named.
  • The content is rather simple: mostly news from abroad, Hungarian or Transylvanian events are only rarely published
  • Due to a lack of subscribers, the circulation came to a standstill (July 1 - September 30, 1831)
  • new partner editor: Sámuel Méhes

The second period (1831-1848)

  • Content as simple as under the direction of Pethe
  • the domestic events get a higher priority
  • from 1838 new format, new design (domestic news moved forward, foreign events moved further back)
  • New editorial team from 1840: Zsigmond Kemény plays a more important role, he writes most of the leading articles
  • the newspaper developed into the opposition's press organ
  • bold and free-spirited statements of opinion by the editorial team
  • Kemény and his colleagues are fired for political reasons
  • the quality drops and the number of subscribers drops sharply

The Third Period (May 16, 1848 - November 9, 1848)

  • Ferenc Ocsvai becomes the new editor-in-chief; his program consists of two points: the realization of the union between Hungary and Transylvania and the realization of a monarchy built on democratic foundations under the government of the House of Habsburg
  • June 1, 1848, the newspaper is Kolozsvári Híradó renamed
  • the last issue appears on Nov. 9, 1848
