The DGPh research award for the history of photography , donated by the “History and Archives” section of the German Society for Photography , was awarded from 1978 to 2018 for scientific research in the field of the history and theory of photography. It was awarded twenty times to a total of 21 researchers, annually from 1978 to 1981, and every two years since 1984. From 1978 to 2010 it was called the Erich Stenger Prize . Award criteria

The DGPh research award for the history of photography is aimed at researchers from all humanities, cultural and social sciences, whose scientific work makes a well-founded, independent and innovative contribution to photography research. Individuals or groups of people who have their permanent residence in Germany could apply. The decision on the award of the prize was made by a jury with a changing cast. Between 1978 and 2000, projects that had not yet been completed were supported with this award; Most recently, the prize was endowed with 3,000 euros.
