Erwin Thiesies (born August 22, 1908 in Berlin , † February 18, 1993 in Hennigsdorf ) was a German national rugby union player and as a coach 17 times GDR champion with BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf .
Player time
Erwin Thiesies, who grew up in the working class in Berlin, completed an apprenticeship as a tailor after finishing school. Sports such as boxing, gymnastics and later rugby were part of his after-work occupation. When he concentrated more intensively on the rugby game, he quickly became a regular at Tennis Borussia Berlin and later at Berliner SV 92 .
There he succeeded in becoming a national rugby player in 1934. By 1940 he had 14 international matches against opponents such as France , Italy , Romania and Czechoslovakia .
During the Second World War he was stationed as a soldier in France and trained with French rugby players.
Coach time
Because he could not return to his bombed-out apartment in Berlin after the war, he and his wife ended up in Hennigsdorf to see his sister and brother-in-law. There he began to rally children and young people to, initially unorganized, to train rugby. BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf was founded in 1948 under the roof of the Hennigsdorf steel and rolling mill . The first coach of the rugby team was Erwin Thiesies, from 1953 as an employee of the steel and rolling mill as a full-time rugby coach.
He remained a coach until 1977 and during this time he won 17 GDR championship titles in rugby union and several cup wins. From 1951 to 1972 he was also the national coach of the rugby national team of the GDR .
He then retired. He was awarded the gold badge by the German Rugby Association and the bronze badge by the FIRA . He died in Hennigsdorf in 1993. Since then, SV Stahl Hennigsdorf 1948 has been organizing an annual rugby hall tournament for youth teams, the Erwin Thiesies memorial tournament .
