Because he could not return to his bombed-out apartment in Berlin after the war, he and his wife ended up in Hennigsdorf to see his sister and brother-in-law. There he began to rally children and young people to, initially unorganized, to train rugby. BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf was founded in 1948 under the roof of the Hennigsdorf steel and rolling mill . The first coach of the rugby team was Erwin Thiesies, from 1953 as an employee of the steel and rolling mill as a full-time rugby coach.

He remained a coach until 1977 and during this time he won 17 GDR championship titles in rugby union and several cup wins. From 1951 to 1972 he was also the national coach of the rugby national team of the GDR .

He then retired. He was awarded the gold badge by the German Rugby Association and the bronze badge by the FIRA . He died in Hennigsdorf in 1993. Since then, SV Stahl Hennigsdorf 1948 has been organizing an annual rugby hall tournament for youth teams, the Erwin Thiesies memorial tournament .
