Archangel Michael Cathedral (Nizhny Novgorod)
The Archangel Michael Cathedral ( Russian Михайло-Архангельский собор ) is the oldest Russian Orthodox cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod in Russia . It was built from 1221 to 1227 in the city center in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin .
history
Construction of the cathedral began in 1221 and the white stone structure was completed in 1227. In 1359 the building was rebuilt.
On April 23, 1628, the construction of the existing building began under the direction of Lavrentija Semjonow and his stepson Antipa. This could already be finished in 1631. In 1704 it was damaged during a fire , so services could not be celebrated again until March 18, 1732.
On March 16, 2009, nine bells were donated to the cathedral by the city council. The largest bell - it weighs 530 kilograms - was installed in the bell tower on March 26, 2009.
