Donkey initiative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Esel-Initiative, a non-profit association for the promotion of single women in remote regions of the world, is a non-profit registered association founded in 1995 with its seat in Bonn to promote single women in remote regions of the world. It financed help for self-help in Eritrea . Today she is promoting international understanding in Nepal in the north. Cooperation partners are the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) in Eritrea and - since 2007 - Sahayog Himalaya-Nepal in the Himalayas.

The NUEW gives away female donkeys to single women in rural regions in order to relieve mothers and daughters of carrying water and to give the mothers the opportunity to start a business. This enables the daughters to attend school. Since 2005, midwives in rural regions have also been given male donkeys as mounts in order to better reach pregnant women and giving birth. The midwives are also committed to combating female genital mutilation .

In Nepal, Sahayog primarily gives away donkeys for transport and cows for milk production - also to single mothers in remote rural regions.

The organization bears the DZI's donation seal . The 292 members bear all costs for information materials and administration.

In June 2009 the Eritrea project had to be stopped due to local difficulties.
