Essar Group is an Indian company with headquarters in Mumbai .

The company was founded in 1969 by the Indian brothers Shashi Ruia and Ravi Ruia . In the early years, the company was active in the construction industry. Over the years, it expanded its fields of activity and founded various subsidiaries. With its subsidiaries Essar Steel , Essar Steel Algoma , Essar Oil , Essar Shipping , Essar Hypermart and The MobileStore , Essar Group is active in India and internationally. Around 75,000 people are employed by the Essar Group and its subsidiaries. In 2016 Essar Oil was sold 49% each to Rosneft and a consortium led by Trafigura and United Capital Partners.
