Essay (philately)

Essay from 1874 for the Wiener Kommunalpost

An essay in philately refers to drafts for postage stamp issues that have not been accepted .

Swiss Post requests various templates in order to find the best color, type of print or the most beautiful design of the motif for a new stamp issue. Designs that are not accepted often go on sale. Such essays, especially from the first stamp issues, are usually very valuable.

Essays should not be confused with proofs . Test prints are only the last test prints before the stamp or series of stamps is issued. Essays are usually not very similar to the postage stamps that were issued later, as these drafts were rejected.
