The Europa Tower ( Lithuanian Europos bokštas ) in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius is currently the tallest skyscraper in the Baltic countries with 33 floors and a height of 148 meters . The skyscraper was built to a design by the Vilnius architectural firm Audrius Ambrasas Architects Company from 2002 as part of the Europa Square ( Europos aikštė ) office and shopping center in Šnipiškės, the new business district of Vilnius, and on May 1, 2004 as part of the celebrations officially opened on the occasion of Lithuania joining the European Union .
Due to its height, the project was initially controversial - critics complained that the high-rise could affect the historic silhouette of the old town of Vilnius , especially since the original design, which provided for 30 floors, was supplemented by three more floors. Today the building, which was nominated as one of the best new skyscrapers for the Emporis Skyscraper Award in 2004, fits in with a number of other high-rise buildings that form the skyline of the new Vilnius. The viewing platform on the 31st floor was open to the public free of charge on Sundays until August 2012.
