The Evangelical Church in Kirchlengern

The Evangelical Church of Kirchlengern belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran congregation of Kirchlengern ( Herford district ) and replaces a previous medieval building that was laid down in 1920 with the exception of the tower.

history

A demolition of the medieval church in Kirchlengern was first discussed in 1899. Due to the growth of the congregation, either an extension of the old church or a completely new church became necessary. After long, tough negotiations, it was finally decided in 1913 to demolish the building. However, the outbreak of World War I delayed the project. The demolition of the old church, the keystone of which bore the year 1525, did not take place until 1920. After two years of construction, the new building was consecrated in a large festival service on March 21, 1922. Three new bells had already been consecrated on January 9, 1921 and were picked up by the community with a pageant from the train station. Old epitaphs and gravestones from the previous building were also embedded around the new church.

The new church is a simple hall building with a semicircular apse, into which five round choir windows are let, which show the evangelists and Jesus Christ in the center. The basement of the medieval church tower was included in the new building, which was also raised. The old tower construction proved to be extremely robust during construction work when the workers chiselled a new portal into the west side of the tower.
