History and architecture

Today's church in the parish of Birkelbach is not the first church in Birkelbach. The first church in Birkelbach was the expansion of a pre-Reformation chapel with a wooden extension as part of the founding of the Birkelbach parish in 1619. The church was a typical chapel church, the exact appearance of which is unknown. The first church master and perhaps also a carpenter of the church was Hans Stephan Hes from Röspe.

In 1707, after the chapel church was demolished, a new, second church was built in a construction period of 18 weeks. The church was 14.20 meters long and 9.63 meters wide. The base of the tower was 2.83 × 3.68 meters. This church was a simple functional building. A rectangular hall with a wooden vaulted tower, a single entrance on the south side and three windows on the east wall provided the lighting. In 1897 this church was closed due to dilapidation.

The third, still existing, Birkelbacher church was built in 1900 in place of the previous church. Since September 25, 1991 it has been entered in the list of monuments of the Erndtebrück community.
