Ex-Steffi from a different point of view

Ex-Steffi was the name of an autonomous cultural and housing project in Karlsruhe , a well-known basis for countless anti-fascist campaigns and campaigns to preserve left-wing open spaces.

In 1990 the story of "Steffi" began with a squatting at Stephanienstraße 60-64 in Karlsruhe. The occupation lasted 25 days until the homeowner and squatters agreed on a lease and thus legalized the situation and the house, which had been vacant for 13 years, was used again.

In 1997, after seven years, the autonomous center was to give way to a retirement home. However, it was possible to negotiate an alternative accommodation with the city administration. The residents of "Steffi" moved to Schwarzwaldstraße 79 and therefore changed the name to "Ex-Steffi". In the new house, the lease was limited to 3 years and only extended once for a further 3 years. The contract ended at the beginning of 2003, and in April 2006 the building was cleared and demolished.

The ex-Steffi was named in the Baden-Württemberg constitution protection report in 2006.

Life in the ex-Steffi

Usually around 20 young people lived there in a self-determined and self-organized manner. 3,000 euros monthly rent were paid for the dilapidated house (as of 2005). There were regular cultural events, which were coordinated via "Terminator", the calendar of the "Ex-Steffi". All offers (concerts, political work, films, people's kitchen every Thursday, etc.) were non-commercial and therefore accessible to people who did not have any financial means. The residents ran a public meeting place for young people with a café. Around 20,000 people per year took part in cultural life. In the rooms of the ex-Steffi there was an info shop and a free shop for the solidarity distribution of clothes.
