eyeOS is web-based software that makes a web desktop available as a rich internet application via the internet on a local web browser. It thus serves as a platform for web applications developed with the eyeOS toolkit and includes a desktop environment. It can also be used from mobile devices via apps . As a user, you need a computer with Internet access and a standard-compliant web browser (such as Mozilla Firefox , Microsoft's Internet Explorer , Apple Safari , Google's Chrome or Opera ).
Eyeos is developed with a combination of PHP and JavaScript .
After the project was originally open source, eyeOS was introduced as eyeOS Professional as part of a product expansion. In April 2014, eyeOS was bought by Telefonica.

- eyeos 1.6 “Gala Sync”: In eyeos 1.6 the code name “Sync” was added to make it clear that the system can now be synchronized with local files via XML-RPC .
- eyeos 1.7 "Lars": In September 2008, Pau Garcia-Milà , the project manager at the time, decided to name versions 1.7 and 1.8 after the German developer and product manager at the time, Lars Knickrehm, because of his efforts for the project.
- eyeos 1.9 "Mars": For a long time the release of this version between eyeos 1.8 and eyeos 2.0 was still a question. In mid-2009, however, Lars Knickrehm decided on behalf of the project, contrary to the opinion of other participants, to publish this version anyway. The development was delayed due to internal discussions, but is now also supported by initial critics. Version 1.9 has been available for download since December 2009. The code name results from the names of two developers.
- eyeos 2.0: In October 2009, insights into eyeos 2.0 were given for the first time. The community was invited to participate in the choice of an upcoming code name. After several articles about the expected functions, a first preview for developers was released in early November. The final version was originally scheduled to appear on January 18, 2010. In the meantime, the announcements for version 2.0 have been revised.

The free version of this project is called oneye project . Its current version is 0.9.0 (as of September 2012).
