EYESBERG is a German-British progressive rock formation. Significant musical influences were / are bands such as Genesis , Camel , Jethro Tull , Anyone's Daughter .

History / reception

After a few personnel changes, the band EYESBERG emerged from the school band Union Pacific in 1978. EYESBERG then consisted of Georg Alfter (guitar), Michael Buchner (drums), Thomas Klarmann (bass, flute) and Norbert Podien (keyboards). Malcolm Shuttleworth (vocals), from Manchester, joined them in 1980. In the years 1980-1983 the band toured extensively in southern Germany, especially in the Rhine-Main area.

After Thomas Klarmann (today: Argos ) and Malcolm Shuttleworth left and after numerous unsuccessful attempts to replace both band members appropriately, EYESBERG disbanded in 1987.

Since the beginning of the new millennium, Georg Alfter, Norbert Podien and Malcolm Shuttleworth have been working on new songs again; in addition, they turned to the old EYESBERG material, which was not professionally recorded and published at the time. The label Progressive Promotion Records offered a possibility of publication . In October 2014 the album Blue was released , which only contains new recordings and revisions of pieces from the period from 1980 to 1983. Titles such as Epitaph , Closed Until The Resurrection , Feed Yourself can be assigned to the genre of progressive rock, while songs such as Inquisitive or Porcelain have more (pop) rock elements. Ulf Jacobs ( Argos ) recorded the drums .

"Blue ... is classic progressive / art rock with very melodic set pieces produced using the latest technology. Above all, the wonderful melodies and the prog vocals make the release a highlight."

"Highly melodic and easy-listening tunes, where the progginess comes more from frequent breaks and tempo and section changes rather than odd time signatures per se or technicality show-offs. Guitars are Rothery / Latimer influenced, melodic and never too distorted. Soloing by guitar and keys are often more melodic lines rather than traditional rock soloing. Flute sounds are frequently used, even in some uptempo sections, giving some Camel-esque or Quidam-esque vibe ... The tracks contain a variety of tempos and dynamic patterns and they are well arranged in terms of sequence so the complete album has a nice dynamic flow. "

The second album Masquerade was released in November 2016. It only contains new material. With Masquerade the band builds on the style of the previous album, but consistently pursues the direction of progressive rock - with the instrumental piece Storm Flood or the 18-minute long track Wait And See . The former drummer, Michael Buchner, who worked for a long time as a sound engineer and producer, ensured the powerful and at the same time transparent sound of the album. Jimmy Keegan ( Pattern Seeking Animals / ex- Spock's Beard ) was won over to record the drums .

"Musically, Eyesberg stick to the line that they took on their 'debut'. Powerful neoprog with swirling key sounds, large surfaces and carpets, euphoric guitar parts over a solid rhythm foundation. Keegan's punchy drumming is a real plus that the pieces the necessary fire gives ... Good melodies, well-arranged pieces, presented with competent musical skills, Eyesberg's "Masquerade" is a successful genre work. It's fun and very entertaining. "

EYESBERG are currently working on their third album - a concept album entitled Claustrophobia . Claustrophobia is a musical psychogram by the painter Vincent van Gogh. Drums and percussion were again recorded by Jimmy Keegan.

style

EYESBERG's music is melodic, symphonic, orchestral. Characteristic are elegiac guitar lines, complex keyboard textures, the use of the (digitally recorded) flute as an additional melody instrument and the change of bars.
