Fábrica de Fluido Eléctrico Hispania

The Fábrica de Fluido Eléctrico Hispania , popularly known as the "Factory of Light" ( Spanish : Fábrica de la Luz ), is a former power station that was built in 1900 by the Spanish architect Francisco de Paula Oliver Rolandi .

location

The Fábrica de la Luz is located on Alameda de San Antón Street in Cartagena in the Murcia region .

history

The red clinker building was originally built by Hispania SA (cement manufacturer). The site of the power plant was later taken over by the multinational Iberdrola Group and used as a substation for power supply for several years.

The steam power plant, with a machine hall around 60 meters long and 14 meters wide, offered space for six large steam engines that generated around 5,000 hp and were connected to alternators via drive belts . However, the two brick chimneys were demolished a few years ago for safety reasons. The building was restored by Iberdrola over several years and opened at the same time as the construction of a department store in 2004, which is located next to the Fábrica de la Luz on the site.

Since November 1994 the building has been listed as an industrial monument in the Bien de Interés Cultural catalog .
