Fūrinkazan
Fūrinkazan ( Japanese 風 林 火山 , dt. "Wind, forest, fire and mountain") is the standard of Takeda Shingen in the Sengoku period . It is a four-character ( Yojijukugo ) quotation from chapter seven, passage 13 and following of the book The Art of War by Sunzi (Suntsu). It reflects the military motto of the Sengoku daimyo :
- Verse 13: 故 其 疾如 風 、 其 徐如林 "Speed of the wind, closeness of the forest."
- Verse 14: 侵掠 如火 、 不 動 如 山 “Fall in and devastate like fire. Immobile (cannot be turned) like a mountain. "
About the author of the standard
Shingen was considered undefeated and only had a few undecided battles with Uesugi Kenshin , his arch-rival. As a follower of Rinzai-shū (Buddhism), he studied Chinese literature and Sunzi, as one of the most famous ancient Chinese military strategists, did not go unnoticed.
