FCAPS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FCAPS is an ISO model for network management . FCAPS defines the cornerstones of today's network management.

FCAPS is the abbreviation for the different areas of responsibility into which ISO network management divides: Fault management, configuration management, accounting management, performance management, security management ( error management, configuration management, accounting management, performance management, security management ).

overview

Fault management / fault management

The aim of fault management is to identify, isolate, remedy and log errors that have occurred in the network. Isolating the fault means: In the event of a fault, it must be possible to determine the common cause of the failure of lines (root cause analysis).

Configuration management / configuration management

Configuration management includes the following points:

  • Collecting and saving configurations of network components
  • Simplifying the configuration of a network component
  • Detecting changes in network configuration
  • Configuration of lines or paths through the network or part of the network (sub network)

Accounting management / billing management

The Accounting Management provides useful statistics available on the use of network resources. This allows costs to be settled or quotas to be checked.

The RADIUS , TACACS and Diameter protocols are used for accounting .

For networks that are not billed according to usage, the term administration is used instead of accounting . Administration contains the administration of users, passwords and access rights.

Performance management / performance management

Performance management allows users to prepare the network for the future.

The stability of the network can be monitored by collecting and analyzing performance data. Trends can indicate future problems in the capacity or reliability of the network.

Security management / security management

The first task of security management is to identify all kinds of risks in the network. Furthermore, these risks must be secured and managed.
