FI 58 was a plant protection product manufactured and sold in the GDR .

properties

It served as an insecticide against forest and oil crop pests as well as Colorado beetles and was specifically intended as an aircraft spray for agricultural aviation for spraying from aircraft . FI 58 was unsuitable for use in other spray devices. The dark yellow, easily movable and non-flammable FI 58 was manufactured by the VEB Elektrochemisches Kombinat Bitterfeld . The substances DDT and lindane , which have since been banned because of their harmful environmental effects, were used as active ingredients .

The manufacturer stated that FI 58 showed good plant tolerance and high rain resistance. The spray cloud quickly sink to the ground. Aircraft parts and hoses would not be attacked either. The substance forms an even spray coating on the plants.

In view of the active ingredients DDT and lindane, however, the harmlessness of FI 58 must be questioned.

application

FI 58 was delivered ready for use in demijohns of 50 kilograms or iron barrels with a capacity of around 200 kilograms. A quantity of 10 liters per hectare was recommended for the action against forest and oil pests, and three liters per hectare for the action against the Colorado beetle. Additives were not allowed to be added to FI 58. To prevent the spray cloud from drifting away, the aircraft should not fly higher than five meters when spraying. In addition, there should be as little wind as possible. The wind should not blow more than three meters per second. The early hours of the morning or the evening were planned as the operating time, since damage to bees was less likely during this time . No areas in bloom or interspersed with blooming weeds should also be treated.

Storage should be such that FI 58 should not be exposed to freezing temperatures for a long time. However, even after prolonged storage, no excretion of active ingredients was expected.
