The Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Finnish Savonia-ammattikorkeakoulu , English Savonia University of Applied Sciences ) is a college based in the eastern Finnish town of Kuopio . Other locations are in the cities of Iisalmi and Varkaus .

history

Savonia was founded in 1992 after the reform of the Finnish higher education system and the establishment of a nationwide network of technical colleges ( ammattikorkeakoulu ). Several older vocational schools in Kuopio and the surrounding area were merged into the new university, namely the design school, the polytechnic and health school of the city of Kuopio, the Walter Ahlström polytechnic in Varkaus and the business schools in Kuopio and Varkaus. First, the institution was named Pohjois-Savon ammattikorkeakoulu ( "Fachhochschule Savo "), the current name she took part of 2004.

With around 6,700 students, around 1,000 of whom are in Varkaus and Iisalmi, Savonia is now the sixth largest university of applied sciences in Finland. The degree program with the highest number of participants is engineering , followed by economics. In addition, professional qualifications can be obtained in IT courses, agricultural sciences, design and healthcare.
