Shop talk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As shop talk (students language education from the 19th century to (ver) talk shop for, simple 'be) referred to a loose, informal technical discussion.

Talking shop is not primarily used to solve a specific task in a learning or work process, but often also has - in addition to the technical aspect - a social function. Due to the common familiarity with the respective technical terms and typical problems, she enables a lively conversation even among strangers without affecting privacy. At the same time, she largely excludes non-specialist subjects from the conversation. It is therefore considered impolite to talk shop if other participants in the conversation are clearly unable to follow the conversation or find the topic uninteresting.

People who have nothing to do with a certain subject and who regard the relevant technical terms as technical jargon tend to refer to any conversation about this subject as colloquial and derogatory as shop talk.
