Badge of the Ertzaintza

The Ertzaintza has been the Autonomous Police of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country in Spain since 1982 . One of the Ertzaintza police officers is called ertzaina .

Ertzaintza currently has 7,500 police officers who are divided into four divisions . Each division is specialized for a specific task.

The Ertzaintza is not recognized by the Basque left nationalists. Since the Ertzaintza took decisive action against the ETA terror , it has itself been the target of ETA attacks and is also said to have been infiltrated by terrorists.

The Spanish government has taken a reserved stance towards the Ertzaintza, accusing it of not cracking down on the ETA terrorism. Ertzaintza therefore has no direct access to Interpol databases. In the past there have even been exchanges of fire between officials from the Ertzaintza and the Guardia Civil due to communication problems .

Ertzaintza officials wear red berets as a distinguishing mark .
