The Cuerpo Nacional de Policía ( German : National Police Corps), also known colloquially as Policía Nacional or CNP , is a Spanish police authority that emerged at the end of the 20th century from the need to provide Spanish cities with a modern security structure. It goes back to a decree of King Ferdinand VII , who called the general police of the kingdom into being. Despite its long, uninterrupted existence, the Spanish police force today has its legal origin in the 1978 Constitution . It is assigned the two basic tasks of “protecting the free exercise of the rights of the citizen and ensuring urban security”.
Unlike the Guardia Civil , the Cuerpo Nacional de Policía allows membership in a trade union such as the Sindicato Unificado de Policia (SUP), the Confederación Española de Policía (CEP), the Sindicato Profesional de Policía (SPP) or the Unión Federal de Policía (UFP).
